PS4 PRO “BOOST MODE” : Does it make a difference ?

ps4-pro-boost-modeSix days ago (03 February 2017) Sony released a new firmware update for those who selected for the beta program to get an early peek at some of the new features coming to PS4 4.50 update.

Reports say that the PlayStation 4 Pro offered an unannounced feature called “Boost Mode” promising higher frame rates of up to 40% on unpatched games and improved gameplay for SOME of the games that were released before the release of PS4 Pro.

Some of the new features either than “Boost Mode” are:

  • External HDD Support
  • Custom Wallpapers
  • Quick Menu Refresh
  • Simplified Notification List
  • Post on PlayStation Network Activity Feeds
  • 3D Blu-rays on PlayStation VR

However most games have a 14% increase in their frame rates in Boost Mode. That coincidentally matches the 14% faster clock speed that the PS4 Pro’s GPU has over the regular PS4 (911Mhz vs 800Mhz).

Games that are also limited by the CPU in the original PS4 can see even bigger performance improvements in Boost Mode, thanks due to the PS4 Pro’s 30% faster CPU. A game like Assassin’s Creed Unity bumps up from an unstable 23 frames per second to a more stable 30 fps. The selected few that had max Boost performance is Project Cars with a very noticeable 35% increase.

Seen below is an increase of almost 30% in Project Cars

“Boost Mode has been designed to provide better performance for those legacy titles that have not been patched to take advantage of the PS4 Pro’s faster CPU and its faster and double-sized GPU, this can provide a noticeable frame-rate boost to some games with variable frame-rate, and can provide frame-rate stability for games that are programmed to run at 30Hz or 60Hz .” said Sony

“Depending on the game, the increased CPU speed may also result in shorter load times. Boost Mode is not guaranteed to work with all titles, however, turning the setting off will allow the game to be played in a mode that replicates the standard PS4. As an aside, the older unpatched titles that run in Boost Mode are unaware that they are running on a PS4 Pro and consequently don’t take full advantage of the PS4 Pro capabilities; power consumption for these games will therefore be a bit lower compared to playing a newer title.”
